Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics

Historical Background

Mrs. T. K. Grant started the kitchen in 1960. It was a small hut where cooking on charcoal sigdis. At that time we had 2 cooks and 1 supervisor. In 1968 a bigger place (dome shaped) was built, which accommodated the kitchen also and canteen to cater to the needs of the staff nurses, doctors and relatives. At that time we had 4 cooks, 2 helpers, 1 manager, 1 dietician, 2 supervisors, 1 storekeeper and 2 cashiers. It was a very homely place indeed. We had no purchase department. Mrs. Grant, along with few of us would go to mandai, to Gultekadi Market, to buy vegetables and fruits in bulk for a week in an ambulance. We had 100-120 patients at the time. Grains and grocery were bought from one dealer. We used to do our own shopping for crockery, cutlery and other items on cash basis. We had two dieticians at that time. We had only “A” ward as the private ward and one pantry. Food to general was sent from kitchen directly. Then “I” ward and the super deluxe “L” wards were started. But now we have 14 pantries serving to the Cancer Unit, Critical Care Unit, like ICU, NTU, CCU, Special Rooms, Private and General Wards, we have expanded but slowly.

Present State

Now we have an ultra-modern kitchen with steam jacketed bulk cookers, gas based multi burners, electric grinders, microwave and walk-in cold storage. People from different hospitals and industries come to kitchen to observe it as a model kitchen. We even train dieticians for their graduate and postgraduate degrees in dietetics. Our SR6 Ward is comparable with the best in the county. We have a very well equipped state-of-the-art pantry attached to the ward. We take pride in serving therapeutic-diets to patients and ala-carte menu to relatives from the pantry. The staff has rare combination of competence and compassion, towards the patients. We work round the clock to serve the patients and their relatives. We would like to thank our Managing Trustee, CEO and our Administrator for supporting us in our endeavor to upgrade ourselves. We have now strength of 2 managers, 10 Dieticians, 20 cooks and 148 staff. We are indebted to the HODs of various departments of the hospital who provide us excellent support. We hope this co-operation will continue in the future too.
