Endocrinologists’ deals with disorders related to hormonal imbalances in the body or diseases related to Endocrine glands (Hormone producing glands) Endocrine glans in body includes Endocrine Pancreas, Thyroid, Parathyroid Gland, Pituitary, Gonads (Testis in males and Ovaries in females), and Adrenal (suprarenal) glands Diagnosis and treatment of endocrine gland related disorders such as
Diabetes Mellitus:
Raised blood glucose (sugar) levels which can be asymptomatic or can lead to various symptoms like frequent urination, thirst, weight loss, repeated infections etc. Broadly divide into two Types Type 1 Diabetes mellitus (commonly seen in children) & Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (commonly seen in adults)
Hypothyroidism / Hyperthyroidism:
Dysfunction of thyroid gland leading to weight changes/ changes in body temperature/ changes in body’s metabolism etc,
Thyroid Nodules- Present as small or large neck swellings, may cause compressive symptoms like difficulty in swallowing, breathing etc
Pituitary Gland related Disorders
Adenomas – Small tumours of pituitary gland which can lead to various symptoms like headaches, visual disturbances etc,
Masses in & around pituitary gland leading to hyper or hyposecretion of hormones,
Hypersecretion of certain hormones from pituitary like Prolactin, Cortisol, Growth Hormone etc
Growth disorders (short stature)
Inability to gain height as expected in children, Being Shortest among peers, stagnant height for months or years etc
Excessive Facial and Body Hair/Menstrual Disorders/Obesity
In females, Regarded as Hirsutism It could be manifestation of common disorders like Polycystic
Ovarian disease (PCOD) or some rare diseases like Tumours of ovaries or adrenals
Osteoporosis and related Metabolic Bone Disease, Disturbances in Calcium Metabolism
Weak bones or fragile bones leading to repeated fractures or progressive stooping of posture etc.
High or low calcium levels in blood can produce various symptoms like cramps, aches and pains,
spasms, repeated kidney stones etc
Secondary hypertension (Pheochromocytoma, Hyperaldosteronism)
Severe Hypertension not responding to standard treatment could be due to overproduction of
certain hormones like Aldosterone, Epinephrine, Nor-Epinephrine
Disorders of Puberty/Fertility
Delayed puberty in boys or girls (Non development of secondary sexual characteristics like Body hair,
cracking of voice, etc in boys and Non development of breasts, No menses in girls)
Infertility/Loss of libido/Erectile dysfunction/Low sperm Count in males Primary amenorrhea/Premature cessation of menses in females
Rare Endocrine tumours Syndromes
Tumours of multiple endocrine glands due to genetic mutations,
