Radioisotope are not used only for diagnostics of diseases. But some of the radionuclide can be used to actually treat the disease itself. For more than 50 years, Radioactive Iodine is used to treat Hyperthyroidism and Thyroid cancer. This has shown excellent results and thyroid cancer patient remain in disease free status for 30 – 40 years after their diagnosis and treatment.
Few more cancers are now identified which can be treated using similar principles. Those are neuroblastoma/ pheochromocytomas and medullary carcinomas of thyroid glands. Prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumors are the most recent malignancies which show promising results.
Nuclear therapies can also be used for bone pain palliation. Radiation synovectomy, treatment of solitary liver metastases & for primary liver malignancies. All these therapies, are available at our department.
When patient receives High Dose of Radioactive medicine, body gives out gamma rays which are not good for normal public and your relatives. Most of this radioactive medicine will be thrown out from your body through urine.
In first 24 to 48 hrs most of the unwanted radiation will be thrown out of the body through urine. As per BARC & AERB guidelines, you will be discharged when you are safe for your relatives and normal public.
No. We will provide most of the essential required things including disposable cloths, linen, towels and a small utility kit. You can carry your personal mobile phone inside.
Hospital will provide you all your meals including breakfast and high-tea. You can carry some additional soft drinks and juices (store in refrigerator in the room) for more fluids intake.
