Revolutionary surgical technology has arrived at our hospital – and it is in the form of a robot named the da Vinci Si® Surgical System. The robotic system is named after Leonardo da Vinci, inventor of the first robot who was known for his unparalleled anatomical accuracy and 3-D details that brought his masterpieces to life.
With the addition of the Da Vinci Surgical System, our surgeons now have helping hands in the operating room, providing enhanced dexterity, fine motor skills, precision, and control during minimally invasive procedures and even multi-quadrant surgeries doing wonders to our surgical prowess.
The Da Vinci Surgical System is a robotic surgical system that was developed by Intuitive Surgical Inc. and was first approved by the FDA in 2000. It is designed to assist surgeons with minimally invasive surgeries by providing a more precise and flexible tool for surgical procedures.
The system is composed of three main components: a console, a patient-side cart, and a vision system. The console is where the surgeon sits and operates the system using hand and foot controls. The patient-side cart holds the robotic arms and instruments, which are inserted into the patient's body through small incisions. The vision system provides a 3D view of the surgical site to the surgeon.
The Da Vinci system's robotic arms are equipped with surgical instru- ments that are capable of greater range of motion and precision than the human hand. The surgeon uses the console to control the robotic arms and perform the surgery, while the system translates the surgeon's hand movements into more precise and steady movements of the robotic instruments.

It’s Minimally Invasive
Because surgeons don't need to use their hands to directly access the body, incisions are smaller than with conventional surgery. The robotic arms also filter out tremors in the surgeon's hands to reduce the chance of inadvertent nicks or punctures that can cause bleeding and infections. Robotic surgery is a great option for someone who needs a procedure in hard to reach areas of the body. In these areas, major blood vessels or other vital organs may be nearby, which can make the surgery more risky. Surgery on these areas would normally require a larger incision to have more room for the surgeon to see exactly what they’re doing to work.

Blood loss during robotic surgery is minimal and you generally avoid the need for blood transfusions. In other surgeries, blood loss can cause complications, and result in even longer recovery times.

The risk of infection exists with any surgical procedure, which can delay your recovery and keep you in the hospital longer. Some areas of the body have a higher chance of infection than others, particularly when large parts of the body are exposed due to long incisions.
