Mrs. T. K. Grant started the kitchen in 1960 with 2 cooks and 1 supervisor. In 1968 a bigger place was built, which accommodated the kitchen and a canteen to cater to the needs of the staff nurses, doctors, and relatives. At that time, there was no Purchase department and procurement was personally overseen by Mrs. Grant, for 100-120 patients. They had two dieticians at that time with one ward as the private ward and one pantry but rest was semi-private & general wards. Food was sent directly. Today, the unit has 15 pantries serving to the Cancer Unit, Critical Care Unit, like ICU, NTU, CCU, Special Rooms, Private and General Wards, Health Check.
Present State
Now, the Clinical Nutrition department has an ultra-modern kitchen with steam jacketed bulk cookers, gas-based multi burners, electric grinders, microwave and walk-in cold storage. The unit serves as a model exhibit to visitors from different hospitals and industries. We even train dieticians for their graduate and postgraduate degrees in dietetics. Our SR6 Ward is comparable with the best in the county with well-equipped state-of-the-art pantry attached to the ward. We take pride in serving therapeutic-diets to patients and A-La-Carte menu to relatives. The staff are competent and compassionate towards the patients, working round the clock to serve them and their relatives. We thank our Managing Trustee, CEO, and our Administrator who support our endeavour to upgrade. We have now the strength of 2 managers, 11 Dieticians, 20 cooks, and 82 staff. We are indebted to the HODs of various departments of the hospital who provide us with excellent support.
